2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Preview

It’s been a couple of years since the Volkswagen ID.4 was introduced to the U.S. market. The electric SUV has proved popular with drivers. If you like what you’ve heard so far about the model, we want to show you what’s next in this 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 preview.1

Cerritos, Irvine, and West Covina, California, shoppers may be ready to make the VW ID.4 their next daily driver, but is it worth it to wait until 2023? At Norm Reeves Superstore, we have the answers for our Huntington Beach, San Diego, and Vista, California, readers!

2023 Volkswagen ID.4: What We Know so far

Only a few changes have been announced regarding the 2023 VW ID.4, leading us to believe that this electric car will look similar in the new model year as it has in the past.

However, the announcements that have been made are worth covering:

  • Production for the U.S. market will move from Europe to Chattanooga, Tennessee
  • Battery pack will be coming from supplier SKI rather than LG
  • Center console will be revised to be more “American style”

Also, excitingly, a new entry-level version of the Volkswagen ID.4 is in the works. This version will have a smaller battery pack, offering less range, but it will start at a lower MSRP to allow even more drivers access to the electric vehicle market.

While Volkswagen hasn’t announced when this new version will be released—it could be later in model year (MY) 22 or even as late as MY24—we believe the entry-level VW ID.4 will be available sometime in 2023.

Production Slated to Begin in Chattanooga TN

Since its inception, the Volkswagen ID.4 has been shipped to U.S. showrooms from the Zwickau factory in Germany, one of the group’s largest e-car plants. By switching to locally produced units, the company plans to slash the MSRP of the VW ID.4 for U.S. consumers.

Production of the Volkswagen ID.4 at the company’s Chattanooga plant is expected to ramp up in June 2022. The company plans to hire more workers by year’s end to build the VW ID.4 electric SUV and have it ready for its release date.

When Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Release Date?

While no date has been announced for the release of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, we expect it to be available by Q4 of 2022 if the production schedule holds.

While it’s possible Volkswagen engineers will make some changes to the VW ID.4 for 2023—like fine-tuning the battery packs to extend the range—it should be mostly unchanged from the current version, from a technical point of view. The current VW ID.4 offers:

  • IQ.DRIVE® driver-assistance technology like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • 12-inch touchscreen display and wireless connectivity
  • 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded
