How Does A Hybrid Work?

Like many Cerritos, Irvine, and West Covina drivers, you may be ready to move to a hybrid car. Or maybe you already have one, and you’re just curious about how it works.

Either way, we at Norm Reeves Superstore are here to clear things up for our Huntington Beach, San Diego, and Vista, California, readers. Wondering how a hybrid car works, and what makes it different from a fully gas-powered (or fully electric) model? You’ll find your answers here!

So, How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

Plug-in Hybrid

If the cars of the past were fully gas-powered, and the cars of the future will be fully electric, hybrid cars are like a bridge between the two. Like a gas-powered car, they have an internal combustion engine. Like an electric car, they have at least one electric motor.

Only hybrid cars have the two together, which makes them different from these other vehicle types on the market. The combustion engine and electric motor work in tandem to keep you moving on the road, and they rely on energy from the car battery to do so.

There are many types of hybrid cars, ranging from mild hybrids to parallel hybrids. The most common though, are full hybrids (i.e., what you probably think of when you think “hybrid”) and plug-in hybrids. What makes these two different? Fundamentally, it’s the way in which the powertrains charge and operate.

A traditional hybrid car cannot be plugged in to charge the battery. Instead, the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine.

Plug-in hybrid cars, as their name implies, can be plugged into either a charging station or a home outlet to charge the battery.
